Personality: John is a very complicated person even though he projects a mask of snarky indifference to the outside world. His biggest negative trait is his ego. Because he took to magic so easily and was praised for it by his friends and teachers, John started to believe he could do no wrong. He attempted spells he clearly wasn't ready for and freely admits to others he refused to listen when people who knew more than he did tried to teach him.
A prime example of John's egotistical nature is how his overconfidence led to not only Natalie Logue's death and ghostly entrapment but also the damnation of her daughter Astra's soul to Hell. Both Anne Marie and his other friends warned John that attempting a resurrection spell was risky, but he went ahead and did it anyway. As a result, John not only ruined his own life, but the lives of everyone else who was at Newcastle that night.
John also has a very cynical view of the world due to both his abusive childhood and the horrors he sees on a daily basis. This had led to John becoming far too honest for his own good, sometimes brutally so. Heroes, angels and even the devil, John doesn't care who you are if he thinks you are being stupid he will tell you so. This has gotten him into trouble more than once, he almost died because he went toe to toe verbally with the voodoo king Papa Midnite and lost.
His cynical nature has also led to John developing both a death wish and addictions to both smoking and alcohol. Because his soul is dammed to hell, John has decided that taking care of himself isn't worth it. He is also the first person on the Legends to throw himself in the path of trouble without worrying about what could happen.
This can be seen on Legends of Tomorrow, when John nearly kills himself sharing his life force with a child he doesn't know in an effort to save them. When Ray Palmer expresses horror at this action, John's response basically boils down to "Better him then me."
He also puts the grown Astra ahead of his own needs time and time again from promising to resurrect her mother, despite knowing the dangers and willingly staying in the fictional world of "Highcastle Abby" just so that Astra can be with her mother again.
While he is honest to fault, John is also a devious bastard not at all above using information against someone in order to get what he wants. He threatens a former friend, Ritchie with jail time in order to get him to help him. He threatens the life of another child in order to gain information he needs to defeat a witch and allows a former lover to die painfully rather than letting the demon possessing him to be released into the world.
For all his faults, John is a loyal friend and teammate. Again he is the first person to go running into danger before anyone else. While he tries to avoid creating lasting relationships, once he does John is in that relationship for life. He freely admits this to Zari when she calls him out on his bitterness and anger. He wants connect with people he's just afraid to let people in and watch them get hurt.
He trusts that his teammates know what they are doing and is willing to go with the flow. This shows in his relationship with Sara Lance, when she is blinded by the Fates, John is the only Legend who trusts her to be the same person she was before telling her. "Yes you are blind, but you can hear," during a fight with a hellhound. He is quick with a compliment while struggling to accept them himself.
John also feels deeply even though he pretends he doesn't. He expresses regret when his words hurt someone, spends years attempting to fix his biggest mistake and kisses everyone like a thirsty man begging for water and will often explode into physical actions when he can't express how he feels in words.
He deeply mourns every loss he's ever had. He willingly breaks the timeline and risks the lives of his new friends just to save his lover Desmond from his choice to make a deal with Neron. When he realizes killing Desmond will reset the timeline, and save the world John makes the hard choice to do it crying the entire time.
John is very charming, but also very good at reading the room when it comes to that. He openly flirts with everyone, but backs off the second he realizes his attentions are not welcome. His first interaction with Leo Snart shows this off well. John expresses his attraction and starts to flirt, but then backs off the second Leo reveals he has a boyfriend even though he is clearly disappointed..
While John's actions can often come off as impulsive, John is actually very intelligent and can think through complex plans with ease if given enough time to sit down and think. Ray Palmer becomes John's second closest friend on the Legends when he realizes that John actually helped him solve a complex scientific issue with a simple sentence.
John's down to earth background allows him to see a bigger picture then someone else might and he willingly shares the information when it can help. solve a problem. He likes showing off what he knows most of the time, but the other times he'll just brush off thank yous like what he did is no big deal. When Ray Palmer expresses worry about getting married, John actually gives him good advice about not waiting to long make a move or you might regret it. John learns from his mistakes and does what he can to keep others from making them.
He uses his lower class background to trick people into thinking he's stupid and then surprises people when they walk into a trap of his own making. In the pilot of his own series, John tricks a demon into a holding trap then has a friend turn off the power to the entire city of Atlanta to cut off the demon's food supply of electricity. He created the plan in less than an hour. after reading one book on the demon.
He also speaks several languages fluently despite Chas telling Zed he only learned the basics for his work as an exorcist and prefers to read a good book during his down time instead of using a phone or computer. When anyone expresses amazement at what he knows John just shoots back with a joke or snarky comment continuing to downplay his own skills and stay behind the mask of the hot mess wizard that he has created.
History: n terms of this AU John's early life remains the same, abusive father, mother died in childbirth, older sister abandoned him, discovery of magic and dammng the soul of Astra Logue to hell and thus his own soul. He is recalled from a mental hospital by the spirit of an old friend and uses his skills to fight against the darker elements of the heroic world. He joins the Legends of Tomorrow and is given the chance to make up for his past mistakes with them.
During a battle with the Greek Fates, John is yanked to the world of Duplicity where he becomes a Submissive. weighted down by his own grief John willingly played along. His good looks catch the attention of the executives of the Studio and he is paired with a young woman named Arha Ilene Masaari. The resulting sex nearly burns the set down and pulls John out of his crushing pain. He signs a contract with her and meets her other Submissive Archie Andrews. He also meets Harry Dresden and the two wizard's bond over their skills
The group gets along well and when the opportunity comes to leave, John is stunned when Arha decides to leave with him to make a life on Earth Prime.
John returns to the Legends, keeping Arha a secret from them to keep her safe. When the final battle with the Fates results in John regaining his soul coin he gives it to Arha to keep safe, not trusting Hell to play fair. They have twin girls together and John gets the chance to spend five years with them before his work with the Justice League takes him away from them and he dies in battle.
But Hell is not happy they lost John's soul and it turns out the Fates cursed the coin before giving it to Astra. Instead of his soul passing on to an afterlife or remaining on Earth as a ghost, John's soul is trapped in the coin forced to serve whoever holds it. John cannot refuse any request the coin's holder asks of him and he cannot lie when the holder asks him a question or someone they trust asks for information. He is also forced to remember everything he's done when under the coin's thrall.
For a while, the coin remains safe in the possession of John's daughters, but word gets out about what it actually is and it's stolen by an unknown thief . The coin passes from demons, to Fae to even fallen angels. During his time in the Winter Court, John learns from Queen Mab herself that he can be freed. but only if he can convince the coin's current holder to melt the coin down using either magic or Hellfire. John begins working to find someone, anyone that will help him.
The coin then falls into the hands of Hades, Lord of the Dead. He pities the battered wizard, but knowing the coin is more valuable with John inside, gifts it to the Freeholding Lord of Chicago to cement their new alliance..
John then becomes John Marcone's newest vassal and he's horrified to realize that Harry Dresden is in thrall to Mab and that his beloved Arha has been reborn and no longer remembers John or their life together. He is both hopeful he can convince one of them to melt the coin, and also despairs at his ability to do so before they see him do something they won't be able to forget.
